H/W Evaluation Factors

Performance :
Speed , Capacity & Throughput.
Cost :
Purchase Price , Operational & Maintenance Cost.
Reliability :
Risk of malfunction & its maintenance requirement.
Error control & Diagnostic feature.
Compatibility :
Compatibility with existing H/W & S/W.

H/W Evaluation Factors

Technology :
Risk of obsolescence.
Does it use a new untested technology ?
In what year of its product life cycle is it ?
Ergonomics :
User friendly, Designed to be safe, Comfortable, easy to use.
Connectivity :
Connectivity with LAN, WAN that uses different network technology and bandwidth alternatives.

H/W Evaluation Factors

Scalability :
Can it handle processing demands, transactions, queries.
Software :
Is system & application S/W available that can best use this H/W ?
Support :
Are the services required to support and maintain it available ?

S/W Evaluation Factors

Quality :
Is it Bug free ?
Efficiency :
Is the S/W well developed ?
Flexibility :
Can it handle our business process easily ?
Security :
Does it provide control procedures for errors, malfunctions and improper use ?

S/W Evaluation Factors

Connectivity :
Is it web enabled ?
Maintenance :
Will new features be easily implemented ?
Documentation :
Is the S/W well documented ?
Hardware :
Does existing H/W have the features required to best use this S/W ?

IS Services Evaluation Factors

Performance :
Past performance in view of their past promises.
Systems Development :
Cost & quality of other e-business developers.
Maintenance :
Is equipment maintenance provided ?
Conversion :
What services will they provide during the conversion period ?

IS Services Evaluation Factors

Training :
Is the necessary training of personnel provided ?
Backup :
Are there any facility for emergency backup purpose ?
Accessibility :
Is the customer support center at the vender's website available ?
Business Position :
Is the vendor financially strong ?

IS Services Evaluation Factors

Hardware :
Do they provide a wide selection of compatible H/W devices and accessories ?
Software :
Do they offer a variety of useful e-business S/W and application packages ?

TESTING

Is a process of finding Bugs.

  • System testing involves testing website performance, testing new H/W, debugging.

  • Important part is the review of prototype.

  • It occurs in implementation as well as development stage.

DATA CONVERSION

  • It is the process of converting the data elements in databases that are affected by a new application into new data formats.

  • Required when installing new S/W.

  • Other activities in data conversion are :
    • Correcting incorrect data
    • Filtering out unwanted data
    • Consolidating data from several databases
    • Organising data into new data subsets

DOCUMENTATION

  • It serves as a method of communication among the people responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a computer based system.

  • Required when installing & operating a newly designed system or modifying an existing system.

  • It is extremely important in diagnosing errors and making changes.

TRAINING

  • IS personnel must be sure that end users are trained to operate a new business system.

  • It involve all aspects of the proper use of a new system.

  • Managers & End users must be educated in how the new technology impacts the company's business operations and management.

CONVERSION

It is the process of switching from present system to the operation of a new or improved application.
  • Four major forms of system conversion are :
    • Parallel Conversion
    • Phased Conversion
    • Pilot Conversion
    • Plunge OR Direct cutover

PARALLEL CONVERSION

Both the old and the new systems are operating untill the project development team & end user management agree to switch completely over to the new system.

PHASED CONVERSION

Only parts of a new application or only a few departments, branch offices, or plant locations at a time are converted.
It is a gradual implementation process.

PILOT CONVERSION

One department or other work site serves as a test site. A new system is tried out at this site untill developers feel it can be implemented throughout the organisation.

PLUNGED / DIRECT CUTOVER

It is the process of leaving the old system behind by implementing new propsed system in the organisation.

It's a QUIZ time now.
